High Court takes Cognizance against ‘Pokemon Go’ Game for hurting Religious Sentiments & National Security

PIL cites misuse of Game’s Geo-location features in US to commit a Robbery

Today, the Gujarat High Court issued notice to the developers of location based reality game ‘Pokemon Go’, after a PIL seeking ban on the game in India proclaiming that it not only hurts religious sentiments but it is also a threat to national security.

A division bench of Chief Justices R Subhash Reddy & V M Pancholi issued notices to Niantic, Inc., San Francisco-based developer of the game,  and Central & Gujarat governments.

As per the PIL by Alay Dave, among other things, the image of eggs shown in the reality game Pokemon Go appear in places of worship of various religious groups.

The petitioner has said that the eggs are considered as non- vegetarian food, & it’s sacrilegious to carry non-vegetarian food inside the places of worship of Hindus & Jains.

PIL also highlighted the issue of game being used as a surveillance tool which can cause threat to national security. The PIL gives an example  Missouri, US in which police had solved a case of robbery which was conducted by robbers by making using geo-location features of ‘Pokemon Go’ game.

Other points raised against the game are that it infringes privacy, & it poses threat of life and limbs to the players, who have to walk around to score the points.

PIL said, “As it affects religious ,social & national security interest, so it should be banned in the country.”
