Give 40% weightage to Board Result and 60% to Entrance Test, ruled SC.

Supreme Court taking into consideration enormous pressure students face to crack medical entrance exams stated that the Government should frame guidelines to do away with present system of a single test deciding their future.

Apex Court further added that,”Instead, of 40% weightage should be given to results of Board exams and 60% for performance in entrance exams while shortlisting the candidates for admission to such courses”.

Supreme Court expounded that,”It is wrong that entire future of a student is decided by his/her performance in entrance examination”.

Apex Court Bench comprising of Justice A K Goel and Justice U U Lalit also expressed concern over the mushrooming of private coaching institutes for the entrance tests and asked Centre to put in place a mechanism to regulate such institutes.

SC was hearing a PIL which was filed by CPM’s student wing SFI, which asked SC to direct regulation of such institutes, which according to the PIL “exploit” students and demand exorbitant fees.

Agreeing that the commercialisation of education must be curbed, Supreme Court, however, stated that such institutes needed to be regulated, but there couldn’t be a blanket ban on such institutes.
